Just a bit more about “Carrieres de Lumieres” in Les Bause, and the unique multimedia exhibition of Marc Chagall.
From the program notes:
Produced by Culturespaces, with the assistance of Marc Chagall Committee, and directed by Gianfranco Iannuzzi, Renato Gatto and Massimiliano Siccardi with the musical collaboration of Luca Longobardi, this show provides an opportunity to rediscover the significant work of Marc Chagall, artist of Russian origin and French nationality, acquired in 1937.

Digitized and projected on 5000 m² of Carrières de Lumières with walls up to 14 meters high, this new multimedia exhibition is conceived as a journey through the major stages in the creation of Marc Chagall.
100 projectors and 27 speakers create a perfect vehicle for Chagall’s themes of love, religious faith, family, roots, and of course music – including beautiful renditions of Bizet’s “Carmen,” Gershwin’s “Summertime,” and less successfully with Janis Joplin performing “Piece of My Heart.” (Why?)

Visitors at Carrieres de Lumieres are not allowed to take flash photos inside, which was fine with me since no photo or video could do justice to the multi sensory experience. It was spectacular, and would occasionally leave one dizzy, as even the floor becomes part of the animation.
Outside the building, the landscape in Les Beaux is gorgeous – similar to the American southwest. While driving the winding roads through rock, and scrub pines, I half expected to see Roadrunner dropping a boulder on the Coyote. Beautiful. Beep-beep.

As a young guy, I had a print of Chagall’s fiddler in my old apartment on Social St. in Providence. Seeing it again in this setting was really special.
