British Writer Pens The Best Description Of Trump I’ve Read

Someone on Quora asked “Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?” Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote the following response:

A few things spring to mind.   Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.

But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.   And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.   Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.   And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.   He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

  • Jane Godall on apes and Trump’s grooming MacronRead
  • This anti-Trump ad is paid for by Republicans. Watch!
  • If you’re British – check out our sister site, The Hobbledehoy

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.   There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.   He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created? If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.

The Republicans (the decent ones), because no way did you want a democrat, so better Trump than that, even though you knew he is a toad. The democrats because you were so sure that one vote wouldn’t matter, that a lot of you still didn’t go out and vote. Or maybe because you didn’t want to because Bernie didn’t get the nomination. And so, collectively, I blame you for voting this toad into the White House.

    1. As an American, I assure you most of us squirm as well. Trump is nothing more than a spectacularly accomplished con man, and his greatest con was convincing just enough people in just enough states that he alone could “fix it.” And so it came to be, through an arcane and archaic electoral college system, he was able to con his way into the White House with a minority of the popular vote.

The rest of us hope that his low approval ratings (never been above 50%, usually languishing in the low 40s) and the fact that just about every Trump-backed candidate has lost just about every election since 2016 is evidence that a majority of Americans now “woke” to what the denizens of NYC have known all along.

      1. The reason why Donald Trump won is because of the electoral college Hillary Clinton won the popular vote 3 million votes over Donald Trump

    2. Because a very large number of Democrats stayed home on Election Day in 2016. Many were lulled into a pouting complacency by the fact that they really weren’t interested in Clinton, combined with the polling that said she would win no matter what. Many were such stalwart Bernie Sanders supporters that they bitterly refused to vote for Clinton on principle, also assuming she would win in any case not knowing the polls were so uselessly wrong.

Only 40% of eligible voters even bothered to vote in Nov 2016. So Trump won 40% out of the 40% who even voted. He lost the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes cast.

If Democrats allow themselves to be split again this year, not unifying behind the Democratic Party nominee, then Trump will easily win reelection.

I can only guess that he represents or offers some escape from the reality they face – which must be truly terrifying for him to seem to be the solution. Perhaps it’s poverty (in all its manifestations)?

    1. First: US people here. Trump did NOT get the popular vote but won the asinine electoral college system. For those that did/do follow him, there are two camps: People with $$$ (not just billionaires) saw safety for their financial needs above everything else or those who feel put upon by democratic leadership, usually has a racial bone to pick, and in too many cases are pig-headed and stupid. Statistics lie, but the going word is that 2/3 of Americans do not follow him and want him gone. The biggest problem: getting EVERYONE who did not vote at all, or chose a third party in a rebellious way, vote either camp. He does need and deserve a crushing defeat.

The fact that Trump was elected President in the first place, and, for reasons unknown to the rest of the world, has a good chance at re-election, speaks volumes of the Republican American intellect (or the rapid decline thereof)… quite sad really. While I can agree with some of ( British) opinions of MY PRESIDENT , let it be known by all that I am in TOTAL DISAGREEMENT WITH most of them , we finally have a president that IS NOT a CAREER POLITICIAN and is NOT AFRAID to go up against the political establishment that has been tearing our country apart piece by piece , just for one example look at the state of California , with it’s liberal attitude and being represented by the speaker of the house Nancy pelosi , homeless living on the sidewalks , shitting on the sidewalks trash everywhere taxes and cost of living are sky high , pelosi went into office a person of average means and today as a “public servant ” is a millionaire several times over , and she is not the only one, I am glad we finally have a President that is draining the swamp , and I and many like me will reelect him in 2020 and by the way my British snobs if it weren’t for the USA YOU WOULD ALL BE SPEAKING GERMAN TODAY

    1. History will reflect that the founding fathers created a system of government which is faulty ie money buys power, but that you have created a monster in a system of government which is corruptible.

      1. You talk a lot of Bollocks. Money does NOT buy power.
Just ask Mike Doomsberg who spent almost $1 billion of his own money to become president.
He was the mayor of New York a few years back. Where is he now that his state needs him?

  25. At least Trump has guts, fortitude and will not take any crap from any foreign country. He warned everyone in his election campaign, “America First”, and that is what he is trying to do, and his non supporters in the USA are against that? We have one of the biggest idiots in the world running our Canada who is slowly bankrupting our country with his spending spree and gives in a communist country like China.

  26. Well I have to say I am not British and have reason to have issues with the british ruling classes as I am Irish… But you sir are a complete and utter prick.
You also seriously need to read up on “actual” history and stop basing your theories on Hollywood as you seem to be doing.
Your lack of real life knowledge is a pure example of Trump supporter.

  27. Absolutely brilliant! He does not represent the majority of Americans. I can see right through him. Most decent people are repulsed by his behavior. At first I thought his supporters would eventually figure out that they are being conned. It’s exhausting to watch the gaslighting of America. Their rage is misguided towards the opposition. If he will do it with you then he will do it to you. He will devalue and discard anyone that does not agree with him or calls him out on his lying. I dare them to challenge him. Welcome to our reality. We all have to do a sanity check daily. I am relieved that others are thinking the same thing. I figure as long as I have not lost my sense of humor then I am good.

Imagine if the only way you knew how to win was to bully, cheat or lie.

Perhaps that’s part 2? Please write part 2!

  29. As an American who thinks for themselves, not by political affiliation, I’m petrified. He is trying to control the media, and his conservative news stations will spin every single thing he does. He could commit murder and they’d find a way to justify it. Those messages are the only news a certain group of Americans will hear. The ones that dont look deeper or further. The ones that vote their political party as if its their favorite baseball team…no fairweather fans here. That coupled with the electoral college, the popular vote wont matter. Enough fox news watching states will need to shut the tv off, listen to trump, and determine the truth themselves. Im doubtful it will happen. However, the true “Patriots” are not the ones pointing at the constitution when their guns are threatened. The true Patriots know why its there and are pointing to it when he berates our 3 branches of govt, when he claims he has total authority over states, when he tries to shut down and bully the media asking hard questions instead of just answering the question, when he leaves all his cabinet seats open so he can use temporary stand ins who will be loyal “yes men” rather than Senate confirmed qualified candidates, when he fires hard working career employees with families simply because they followed the law that exposed him in some way, etc. The list goes on. Draining the swamp isnt hiring and firing your own team again and again. Draining the swamp would be limiting the number of years our Congress can hold office so we get can get younger perspectives and get the same few controlling what passes through the house and Senate out of there. His smoke and mirrors work. He’s a conman and he’s very good at it.

  30. My apology is to my Canadian friends. This excuse of a human has embarrassed us to the depth, but I can’t believe how many idiots follow his lies and Fox news is an example of that stupidity. SORRY to our friends to the North for this virus of a president. Hopefully, his lies will come back to bite him.
